Foods To Avoid During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is the most important time in your life to eat healthy, as you are eating not only for yourself but also for your baby. Apart from consuming a healthy diet full of fruits, vegetables and whole grains, you should know what to avoid during your pregnancy as well. Here are some foods and drinks that should be completely avoided:

Raw Sea food and Mercury rich fish:

Raw sea food like oysters, uncooked sushi and sashimi should be completely avoided during your pregnancy, as well as certain fish that are very high in mercury as they may cause problems with your baby’s developing nervous system. These fish include shark, mackerel, tile fish and sword fish.

Soft Cheeses:

Soft cheeses such as Brie, Camembert, feta, queso fresco, queso blanco and Stilton (Blue cheese) should be avoided completely. These contain harmful bacteria that can make you sick.

Raw meats and raw eggs:

Raw or undercooked meat, eggs and poultry should also be avoided. These all contain the harmful bacteria Salmonella that can cause Typhoid. Try to avoid Pate, raw batter, eggnog, raw cookie batter, homemade mayonnaise and hollandaise sauce.

Organ Meat:

Try to avoid organ meat such as liver, kidneys, sausages etc during pregnancy as they contain very high levels of toxins and even vitamin A which can harm your baby.

Nuts:

If your family or your husband’s family have a long history of eczema, hay fever or asthma, it’s better for you to avoid nuts such at peanuts and almonds during pregnancy. This may also reduce the chances of your baby developing such conditions.

High Caffeine Drinks:

Some women are lucky that they develop a natural revulsion to high caffeine drinks like sodas and coffee during the first trimester. Caffeine carries a high risk of miscarriage and pre term labor so it’s better to avoid or severely limit caffeine intake.

Alcoholic Drinks and Smoking:

Alcohol is an absolute no no during pregnancy. If you consume alcohol during pregnancy you can cause your baby to have physical defects, emotional problems and learning disabilities.  Smoking can also cause similar problems and has been associated with pre term labor and birth defects.

Always ask your doctor before taking any medicine or food.
