Alternatives For Stretch Mark Treatment
Stretch marks are caused by the rapid gain of fat or muscle that results in damage to the dermal layer of the skin. The consequence is scarified tissue that appears as reddish or purplish marks on the surface, that often later transform into white scars. Most people have at least some stretch marks somewhere on the body. It can be a frustrating problem for those who want to rid themselves of these unsightly marks as few people understand how to effectively treat them. Some of the methods that have been proposed as a treatment for stretch marks are being evaluated below.
Surgery For Removal of Stretch Marks
There are mainly two surgical methods against stretch marks:
- (i)Dermabrasion—this is an abrasive procedure that aims to get rid of the superficial damaged layers. However, it does not reach the dermis, which lies deeper in the skin. Stretch marks are the result of atrophied tissue in the dermal layer. Hence, dermabrasion is not really effective in removing stretch marks. Diamond fraise, sand or micro-crystals are used for abrasion.
- (ii)Chemical Peels—this can be done by the application of glycolic acid (for superficial layers), tri-chloroacetic acid (for medium depths) and phenols (for deep peels). Application of these chemicals obtains very irregular results. There can be various side effects including scarring and dark spots. Phenol is particular is a very dangerous chemical with potentially life-threatening consequences on application (e.g. a decrease in the amount of hemoglobin in the body).
- (iii)Cosmetic Laser Surgery—this is considered to be the most successful surgical treatment of stretch marks. This method is very effective on deep and old stretch marks as well as newer marks. Laser treatment removes, vaporizes and breaks down atrophied scar tissue so that they can be replaced by new and healthy tissue. Successful laser surgery depends on a series of treatments spanning several weeks. While it is very effective in most people, it is by far the most expensive method, running well into thousands of dollars. It is therefore not an option open to many people.
Surgical treatment of stretch marks, even if effective, is categorized as cosmetic surgery. It is therefore not covered by medical insurance. The patient has to bear the cost for the whole treatment, which can be quite expensive.
Stretch Mark Creams and Lotions
The alternative to ineffective or expensive surgical methods is the relatively cheap creams and oils that help the skin become firmer and more supple while at the same time reducing the appearance of stretch marks. One of the most effective creams on the market right now is the Cosmetyn ® Stretch Mark Therapy. Cosmetyn cream has two basic functions:
- (i)When applied during the formation of the stretch marks, it helps restore the elasticity of the skin so that the latter is better able to extend. This reduces the damage to the dermis and therefore minimizes the formation of scar tissue that leads to stretch marks.
- (ii)When applied over old stretch marks, it supplies the skin with a host of amino acids that aid in the formation of new tissue. These new tissues replace the atrophied ones, leading to fading of the stretch marks.
The effectiveness of Cosmetyn cream has been clinically proven. In clinical trials, subjects with stretch marks report a 35% reduction in the surface of the body covered with stretch marks in the first eight weeks of treatment with Cosmetyn cream. Cosmetyn cream is also very cheap. It can come for as little as ……………. Compared to expensive laser treatments, it offers the same effectiveness as much smaller cost. It is an affordable solution against stretch marks available to everybody.
